Death Certificate of Wyatt S. Gunn
This is the only document found with positive I.D. of Wyatt, Sarah and Columbus Gunn's parents! I was sooooooo happy to see that David Gunn and Mahala Sampson on there!!
Deed of property right across the road from the church. Don't imagine the road was there then.
This is how we first connected our Gunns to the Floyd County Gunns! This deed was for the sale of 1/5 of Rev. David T. Gunn's estate after he and his wife died! Wyatt Gunn and Sarah Gunn Little inherited their deceased father's(David F. Gunn) part. There were five children, Ira Willis, Matthew, David F.(Findly), Thomas Sparks, and Nancy who married a Baggerly! This is the part about Findly in the Gunn story found at the New Albany, In. library. This was written by two Gunns named Chester and Clarence Gunn in 1943 but I understand there is a revised addition in 1956 which I have not seen! The story reads:Findly Gunn was borned in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, birth date unknown. Little is known about this Gunn so far as purchasing land and establishing a home are concerned.(This isn't true as I have looked at the deeds and they are retyped in the deed book indexes and accounted for as David Gunn and doesn't distinguish between David's) When a Young man he started with a boat load of cattle down the Ohio river, bound for New Orleans, but he never returned and no whereabouts ever came back. It was thought he and his entire crew were either drowned or killed by robbers. It is definitely known that at that time it was considered a hazardest undertaking to start on a flatboat trip to New Orleans.( This is the reason our ancesters were in Perry County, they were raised by their maternal grandparents the Wyatt Sampsons) What we can't figure out is what happened to David F.'s 2cd wife Unus Hunt (maybe on the flatboat too??) There was a little girl Amelia Ann living with the old Rev. David Gunn's in 1850 and 1860. We wonder if she was David F and Unus's child.?? Can't find a thing on her after 1860. It's interesting to note that David F's brother Matthew was married to Mahala Sampson Gunn;s cousin Susan LaFollette! She and a baby are buried in Hopewell Baptist Cemetary with some of the Sampson's. Unknown where Matthew is buried.
REV. DAVID T. GUNN AND FAMILY (Elizabeth's) GGGG-GRANDFATHER
This is my most prized posession in geneology. This is a letter written to the ARMY at St. Louis Missouri by Grandpa Sampson for Wyatt Gunn and Sarah Gunn Little so they could get their brothers clothing!( I should say this is a copy of the letter) And at the bottom is a receipt for the clothing" 1 Jacket, 1 Pr. Pants, 1 shirt, 2 Pr. drawers. 3Pr. socks, 1Pr. shoes. 2 caps, and 1 blanket! The Joel Butler must have been related to the Sampson's as one Sampson's daughter, Amelia married a Ira Butler. The Butlers moved to Illinois. I get soo sad when I read this thinking Columbus lost his mother and father at a young age and then his life! Columbus was married according to the census but evidently she must have died also as I can't find out anything about her. Her name was Mary Holman! I had to ry this 3 times before I got it to the size I wanted!HaHa
